OHES Environmental in action

Case study:

When a fully laden 38 ton tanker was forced off the road by a careless driver, the consequences could have been disastrous. The tanker overturned and all its compartments were ruptured, spilling 33,000 litres of oil across a main road and on to open countryside.

Oil leaked on to the public highway and roadside pavements making the tarmac surfaces soften. Product entered the roadside gullies which discharged to the local stream causing pollution. A significant quantity of oil entered front gardens belonging to 3 domestic properties, soaking into block paved driveways, tree lined flowerbeds and lawn areas.

OHES co-ordinated the emergency response to the incident using our network of accredited contractors and liaised with the on site emergency services during the initial phase of the incident. The site was in a groundwater inner source protection zone (SPZ) making it imperative that remediation measures were taken immediately.

Our staff undertook site investigation surveys across the affected area to establish the severity and spread of oil contamination. We liaised with the Environment Agency over the polluted watercourse and groundwater issues, the local Water Utilities company over their public drinking water abstraction, the local Highways Authority over works to the roadway and pavements and the householders whose property had been significantly impacted.

Whilst this loss was relatively large, we have extensive experience in managing smaller spillages in domestic settings and provide a calming, pragmatic and professional approach to all our projects.

Testimonial:

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank OHES for producing such a clear and comprehensive report. In addition, both you and your client's co-operation throughout the incident was invaluable in ensuring that the environmental impact was minimised.”
